Short answer: choose a hydraulic door closer rated for your door's weight, then decide between an overhead (visible) and a concealed (hidden) installation. For DOORiS closers, doors of 40-60 kg suit the Light Duty model, doors of 60-80 kg suit the Lever Arm or Pelmet Arm model, and the Concealed model suits doors up to 80 kg.
1. Start with the door weight
Every door closer is rated for a range of door weights. A closer rated too low may not close the door fully. One rated too high can make the door heavy to open. Weigh your door, or ask your door maker, and match it to the rating.
| Door weight | DOORiS door closer | Mounting |
|---|---|---|
| 40-60 kg | Light Duty Door Closer | Overhead, lever arm |
| 60-80 kg | Hydraulic Door Closer With Lever Arm | Overhead |
| 60-80 kg | Hydraulic Door Closer With Pelmet Arm | Overhead |
| Up to 80 kg | Concealed Door Closer | Concealed |
2. Overhead or concealed?
Overhead door closers are fixed on the door or frame and stay visible. They are the most common choice for homes, shops and offices and suit most doors. Concealed door closers are fitted out of sight for a clean look, which suits modern interiors where appearance matters. Concealed models usually need to be planned before the door and frame are made, so decide early on new projects.
3. Pick the arm style
DOORiS offers a lever arm closer for a conventional look and a pelmet arm closer with a modern profile for overhead mounting. Both are aluminium hydraulic closers with a 180° door opening angle.
4. Check the colour and finish
The Lever Arm, Pelmet Arm and Light Duty closers come in Silver, Black, Brown, Gold and Antique, so you can match the door hardware already in the building. The Concealed closer is available in Silver.
5. Fire doors and special requirements
Fire-rated doors often need door closers certified for that use. Confirm the certification your project requires before you order, and ask the team if you are unsure what to choose for a particular door.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by price alone without checking the door weight rating.
- Using one closer size for every door in a building, from light cabin doors to heavy main doors.
- Deciding on a concealed closer late, after the door and frame are already made.
- Skipping the finish check, then ending up with mismatched hardware.
